Delivering training

We have highly curated training sessions in FASD (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome), Anxiety and fear in teens and problematic sexualised behaviours.

AOD

We specialise in providing support to young people dealing with Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) misuse. Our dedicated team offers personalised counselling sessions to help individuals understand and address substance use as a coping mechanism. Through mentoring, narrative therapy, and psychosocial education, we empower young people and their families to build resilience, confidence, and healthier coping strategies.

Counselling

Our confidential counselling services are delivered in a number of remote and regional areas across the top end by an experienced counsellor and passionate mentors. Using several modalities such as narrative therapy, we work with each young person as an individual to identify what they want to work on.

Why is DYS Different ?

What is counselling? Counselling is talking to a trained professional to help you deal with feelings or experiences you are going through. Counselling can help with your communication skills and improve how you relate to people. You can see a counsellor; – by yourself; – with your partner or other family members; or – as part of a group counselling session. You can see a counsellor that specialises in helping people having difficulties in their family relationships. Some organisations also provide counselling services to children. Your local service provider will help you find the most appropriate support for your circumstances. More information about counselling and separation Why is DYS Different? Our qualified counsellor works with young people, families, couples, and individuals to explore solutions to personal and relationship problems and other challenges. Our approach is person-centred, therapeutic and strengths based. Tailored sessions can be arranged for children and young people following the principles of Child Focused Practice through a strength-based Lense. We met our clients where they feel comfortable, and encourage them to bring a support person into their session if they deem appropriate. Our counsellor has worked with young people in community settings across the NT and remote NSW her whole career and knows too well, how to break the ice and get into the depth of the problem whilst building rapport with our clients.

How we do it!

At DYS, once you gain trust with our counsellor, mentors etc then you can feel like you have a person that is purely there for you.

Hello! I am Sarah Austin
Founder & Director, Darwin Youth Service

I founded Darwin Youth Services after recognising a critical gap in support for young people—one that goes beyond traditional clinical settings and offers innovative, practical, and engaging services. Too often, young people fall through the cracks because conventional approaches don’t always meet them where they are. I wanted to change that.

With extensive experience in child protection, youth work, counselling, and community development, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges young people face, particularly those impacted by domestic and family violence. I knew there was a need for a service that thinks outside the box, providing education and support in a way that truly resonates with young people.

At DYS, we specialise in collaborative, evidence-based programs that are aligned with the NT Curriculum, ensuring our education and prevention initiatives are relevant, research-backed, and effective. We work closely with schools, community organisations, and service providers to deliver programs that are flexible, engaging, and responsive—meeting young people where they feel safe and heard, rather than expecting them to engage in settings that don’t work for them.

I’m passionate about creating programs that empower, educate, and make a lasting impact. At DYS, we’re not just another service—we’re here to do things differently, drive real change, and ensure young people have the knowledge and support they need to thrive.
