Course Overview

This foundational workshop builds the confidence and capability of professionals working with young people impacted by Domestic, Family, and Sexual Violence (DFSV).
It offers a realistic, culturally-aware introduction to what effective engagement looks like in youth settings — from recognising risk and responding safely, to understanding how trauma shapes behaviour and communication.

Drawing on the five key types of violence most often seen in the Top End — emotional, physical, sexual, financial, and elder abuse — participants will explore how these forms of harm show up in young people’s lives, relationships, and communities.

Participants will also practice using curriculum-aligned, evidence-based resources designed specifically for the Top End, helping bridge theory and practice in real classroom and community settings.

Key Learning Outcomes:

Participants will:

  •  Understand the key concepts and language around Domestic, Family, and Sexual Violence.
  •  Explore how trauma, shame, and developmental stages influence young people’s responses.
  •  Learn safe and appropriate ways to have conversations about relationships, consent, and respect.
  •  Identify early warning signs, risk indicators, and referral pathways.
  •  Develop practical engagement tools to build trust, safety, and accountability.
  •  Strengthen their confidence in supporting young people while maintaining professional and cultural boundaries.
  •  Deepen understanding of the five key themes of violence and their unique presentation in Northern Territory contexts.
  •  Practice applying curriculum-aligned, evidence-based tools developed for use here in the Top End.
