TIWI COLLEGE YOUTH PROGRAM

Implementing and embedding DYS Domestic and Family Violence Prevention

Darwin Youth Services has successfully implemented the I Respect Domestic and Family Violence Prevention youth program on the Tiwi Islands for the past 18 months, engaging young people in meaningful discussions and activities that promote respect, healthy relationships, and violence prevention.

Through a culturally responsive approach, DYS collaborated with local community leaders, schools, and service providers to ensure the program was relevant and impactful for Tiwi youth.  Interactive workshops, storytelling, and creative activities empowered participants with knowledge and practical skills to recognize and address domestic and family violence.

Key achievements of the program included:

  • Strong community engagement and participation from local youth.

  • Culturally appropriate content tailored to the needs of Tiwi Island communities.

  • Collaboration with local Elders and service providers to reinforce positive messaging.

  • Empowering young people with strategies to foster respectful relationships.

This program has contributed to building safer, more respectful communities by equipping the young people in Melville Island with the tools to challenge harmful behaviors and advocate for positive change. We look forward to continuing this work and expanding its impact in the region. This pilot has been funded through federal funding – SHFPACT Family Planning.
